VoIP with Skype on 3G iPhone

While driving to work and checking the daily news I was very happy to know that Skype was available for the iPhone although I already use SIP clients with my iPhone over 3G.

As you may know Apple and wireless carriers forbid certain apps (especially voip) from working over 3G. Not because any technological constraints but to protect wireless operators businesses. This raises an issue about Net neutrality.

The wireless carriers’ actions clearly violate Net neutrality principles too. As summarized by Brad Reed of Network World, the tenets of Net neutrality, as outlined by the Federal Communications Commission in 2005, clearly side with the consumer:

“These principles state that networks must allow users to access any lawful Internet content of their choice, to run any legal Web applications of their choice, and to connect to the network using any device that does not harm the network. Additionally, the principles state that consumers are ‘entitled to competition among network providers, application and service providers and content providers.’ ”

I installed it to find that it doesn’t work over 3G, ohhhh crap  ! I remembered that there is a package voipover3G that tricks apps into thinking that they are on Wifi even though they are on 3G, it wasn’t updated to work with Skype.

Today I just updated VoIPover3G and Skype over 3G worked flawlessly.

It has a little bit of latency but nothing serious, perfectly ok to have a conversation.

Im assuming you have a jailbroken iPhone with Skype app.

How to get Iphone with Skype working over 3G

Go to Cydia and install VoIPover3G package. Since you are at it, install Backgrounder and Siphon (SIP client, you can configure this with any VoIP provider like Voipcheap, Voipbuster, etc )

Open Skype and voilá it should work over 3G.
